Josephine M. Servais

Josephine M. Servais, 93, of La Crosse passed from this life unto eternal peace on Tuesday the 18th of November 2008.

She was born on June 13, 1915, to Frank and Elizabeth (Schumacher) Donskey. When Jo was just 9, she lost her mother. Her father continued to raise the family on St. Joseph’s Ridge, and Jo was in the first class to graduate from the new St. Joseph Grade School. She graduated from Aquinas High School in 1934 and attended the Teachers College, now UW-La Crosse, until she left to care for her ailing father. On June 22, 1937, she married Edwin E. Servais at St. Joseph’s Church on St. Joseph’s Ridge. To this union, 10 children were born.

They had eight sons and two daughters. Jo’s family and faith meant everything to her. She always supported her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren in all of their endeavors. Growing up, Mom always told us that a family that prays together stays together. She was named woman of the year twice, once at St. Pius Church and last year at Mary Mother of the Church. She was a member of the Catholic Knights for more than 50 years and received a golden rosary for that honor. She enjoyed sewing, gardening, crocheting, playing cards, watching baseball and football, and baking, especially apple pies and chocolate chip cookies for her family.

She is survived by one daughter, Rose (Charles) Tydrich of Onalaska; eight sons, Gerald (Denise) of Kokomo, Ind., Robert (Marilyn), Daniel (Marybeth) and Mark (Francine), all of La Crosse, Frank (Janet) of Mondovi, Wis., Patrick (Nancy) of Plymouth, Minn., Edwin (Anne) of Omaha, Neb., and Gregory (Laurie) of Coon Valley; 23 grandchildren; and 22 great-grandchildren. She is also survived by her good friends, the girls, Polly Jung, Ione Ross, Ruth Karis and Arlene O’Loughlin.

Jo was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Ed, on Jan. 17, 1987; her infant daughter, Marjorie; two brothers, Eugene and Gilbert Donskey; and three sisters, Marie Servais, Hildegard Donskey and Inez Rottman; and all of her brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law in the Donskey and Servais families.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be Monday, Nov. 24, at 10:30 a.m. at Mary Mother of the Church Parish at St. Thomas More Church on Weston Street, La Crosse, with the Rev. Douglas Robertson officiating. Entombment will be in St. Francis of Assisi Mausoleum, Catholic Cemetery, La Crosse. Friends may call at Schumacher-Kish Funeral Home of La Crosse on Sunday from 4 to 8 p.m. and at the church Monday from 9:30 a.m. until the time of services. A rosary will be recited Sunday at 7 p.m.

The family would especially like to thank Dr. John Teske, the staff at St. Francis and Bethany St. Joseph’s, and a special thank you to Polly and Ione for looking after our mother for so many years. We love you Mom, Grandma, and Great-Grandma, and you will live in our hearts forever.

Sid’s greatest enjoyments in life came from spending time with his family. His granddaughter, Jordan, said “Grandpa Sid was a man with a big heart.” Sid was very proud of his children and grandchildren and their accomplishments. He could always be counted on to be an avid fan and supporter at all of their activities. He was especially looking forward to following Jordan’s senior basketball and softball seasons. Remember, Jordie, “You can swing at the first pitch.” Sid was an avid bowler, golfer and a “card shark.” Many a family gathering was spent around the pinochle table, and it was a great day when he and his partner swept the game!
