Benefit to aid dental, mental health needs

.
After raising money in recent years for cancer and a local free clinic, show choir members from Logan and Central high schools will do their part for a cause much closer to home.

Sunday’s program, “Kids Helping Kids: A Benefit for Young People’s Health Event,” will raise money for dental and mental health care for La Crosse students.
As part of the benefit show, the Normal L. Gillette Sr. Family Fund, through the La Crosse Community Foundation, established the Kids Helping Kids Fund to support these and other unmet needs, said Sheila Garrity, executive director for the community foundation.

“We hear over and over again that dental care and mental health services, especially among young people, are either lacking or difficult to access,” Garrity said. “This fund ... will always be there to help kids in need.

Michelle Myhre, a member of Central’s “Grand Central Station,” said it feels good to be part of the program.

“The La Crosse School district has so many students in need. I think it’s great that we can help them. It’s a great thing having kids helping kids.”

" Happymom, I was just pointing this out....I can afford my dental care but know of many that can not. Teeth are important to ones health whether rich OR poor. All I am saying is that it seems to be a luxury that many can not afford. Now with so many losing their jobs, it will be even MORE difficult for them to get proper dental care, esp. children. Perhaps you are the wife of a dentist and therefore your comment. "

" To Happymom:
So what you are saying is it's ok to treat the poor as if they are just a pain in the dentist's behind?! I would hope for better manners from any dentist. Afterall, even poor people are human, have feelings and not everyone who is poor is poor from choice! By the way, are you one of 'them' who snub the poor? I sure hope you enjoy looking in the mirror. I do know it is hard for the dentists but they should still have compassion for others. "

" Nana and Horse, if the dentist gets no compensation for the work he does on you, can you blame him for not wanting to provide your care? If he took care of your rotten tooth, how could he turn away the other ten people with rotten teeth standing in his doorway? How much of his practice should be for charity work? Ten percent, twenty? Who decides? "

" 99% of dentists will not take medicare patients, unless you have a severly infected tooth. The one I had to go to spent as little time as possible, numbed it left the room for 15 minutes came in jerked the tooth out walked out. Slamb bamb! "

" What a great idea. Especially since insurance companies don't pay well for dental. Teeth are important to ones health but insurance companies don't think so, they would rather you have your teeth pulled and dentures then preventitive measures. Most dentists demand payment in full (which can run thousands) for care....no money equals no teeth or relief for suffering from pain. "
