Regarding the article by Rev. Kent Johnson (Oct. 18 Tribune), we must comment that he is misinformed.
He refers to Israel's "occupation" of the land. The fact is that Israel regained land through wars that she did not start - she was attacked the day after the League of Nations accepted her restored statehood on May 14, 1948 (it did not even have an army yet) and again in 1967 and 1973 - not to mentions the smaller wars of the past 20 years. The Israeli Defense Forces have experienced supernatural interventions that served to give them the victory in these battles. Jews from around the world have gone back to their roots only to be hated for it and accused of taking the land from the Palestinians. This land never belonged to the Palestinians, not ever. Under the British Mandate, the land was occupied by both Jews and Arabs and called Palestine but was not a nation nor governed by them.
Would Johnson suggest that all the Americans who live in Texas should have to apologize to the people of Mexico for occupying their land - land which actually was once theirs? Johnson seems to think "every person of faith" should get involved to make Israel stop her settlement building, and he briefly mentions that the Palestinians must also stop something: "Violent resistance," which is actually suicide bombers in the marketplace or at military sites or using innocent families as a shield to make war in the neighborhoods by confiscating homes and businesses. During one of our four trips to Israel, such a battle took place not far from where we were staying. Israel's enemies live all around her - the Arab nations have 300 times the land mass of little Israel - yet they are determined to take that and "drive the Jews into the Mediterranean" (their printed statement, not ours).
We will call our senators and congressmen to tell them "America must support Israel" - and it is not about money for them. Their people are coming home. God will take care of them. It's America we are concerned about. And, last, peace came to the Middle East the night Jesus was born in Bethlehem. He is the only peace with God for any person of any nation. God loves all people - Arab, Israeli, American, Chinese, Somalian, British, Russian - all can have peace with Him through His gift of love: His Son, Jesus Christ.
