La Crosse County's population grew by 1.23% to 108,433 from 1990 - 2000.
The Jackson Correctional Institution, which opened in 1996, had 960 male inmates when the census was taken.
Today, more than half the residents in six Vernon County communities report Norwegian blood: the town of Coon, 62%; Westby, 61%; Coon Valley, 56%; the town of Christiana, 54%; the town of Jefferson, 53%; and the town of Franklin, 51%.
According to Census 2000 figures, there were 209 Hispanics in Norwalk out of a population of 653 people.
In increasing numbers, people of color, be they African-American, like Osborn, Hispanic or other ethnic heritage, are moving into Houston County, according to the most recent census numbers.
