ELGIN, Ill. - It was a night of good news-bad news for the Viterbo University women's basketball team Thursday.
The V-Hawks opened the season with a well-rounded 66-50 nonconference victory over Judson (Ill.). But point guard Brooke Anderson left the game 10 minutes into the first half with an apparent torn ACL in her right knee.
Anderson was named the team's co-captain as a sophomore during the pre-season and was expected to be one of Viterbo's key players both offensively and defensively.
"That was a huge blow," V-Hawks coach Bobbi Vandenberg said. "She's the rock of our team."
Vandenberg said Anderson hasn't been examined yet, but she is "99 percent sure" the injury is a torn ACL.
Senior forwards Katina Mandylaris (17 points, 14 rebounds) and Joni Stanek (16 points, six rebounds) led Viterbo, while the team's eight freshmen all saw time and combined for 23 points. Sami Weaver, a Gale-Ettrick-Trempealeau High School graduate, had seven points and six rebounds in 19 minutes, and Dani Templin started and scored five points with seven rebounds.
Freshmen Jada Straub and Laquita Becker, a Caledonia, Minn., native, filled in after Anderson left the game.
"What was really a pleasant surprise was Jada and Laquita," Vandenberg said. "They stepped in and shared the minutes at point guard and really did a great job."
Straub and Becker combined for six points, six assists and three turnovers.
Viterbo's defense held Judson to 29.5 percent from the field.
