CALEDONIA, Minn. - The goal on every snap was the same for the Caledonia High School football team's offensive line on Friday night.

The Warriors were looking for a modest 4-yard gain and a headache for someone on the Zumbrota-Mazeppa roster.

They were physical, and they worked as a unit to get that desired result much more often than they didn't.

The Caledonia defense turned in another strong performance, but the ability of the offensive line to help sustain drives was the difference in a 20-12 victory over the Cougars in an MSHSL Section 1AA title game.

"It was 4-yard headache football," Caledonia left tackle Casey Klug said. "(Assistant) coach (Phil) Costigan always says he wants 4 yards and a headache for the other team.

"We never really had breakout plays, but we sustained things, which is what we wanted to do."

Klug, guards Tyler Johnson and Garrett Ashbacher, tackle Mitch Reiser and center John Schutte - with Cole Macejik and Greg Becker rotating in at guard and tackle, respectively - were consistent in opening holes for running back Lonnie Hudson, who gained 108 yards.

Hudson's 1-yard touchdown run on the first play of the fourth quarter gave Caledonia a 20-12 lead it held the rest of the way.

The Warriors play 10th-ranked Waterville-Elysian-Morristown (10-1) in a state quarterfinal Friday in Rochester.

"We had the kind of game we needed to have tonight," Klug said. "That was a blast. It may be the most fun I've ever had in my life."

Top-ranked Caledonia (11-0) won its third straight section title with one 51-yard drive that lasted 4 minutes, 2 seconds and a 68-yarder that lasted 6:17.

Those scoring drives and interceptions by Michael Ideker, Justin Hesse and Isaac Fruechte took care of the Cougars (8-3).

Ideker returned his 12 yards for a second-quarter touchdown that tied the game, and Fruechte and Hesse picked off passes on Z-M's final two drives.

"You won't turn away anything that allows you to score quickly, but we wanted to eat some clock tonight," Caledonia coach Carl Fruechte said. "(The Cougars) did some things I didn't expect them to do, and the kids responded."

Zumbrota-Mazeppa turned a recovered fumble into a touchdown early in the third quarter to get within 13-12. But instead of kicking the extra point - an attempt after the first touchdown was short - it went for the lead.

Troy Frank tackled Cole for a loss on the play. Frank also made three other tackles behind the line of scrimmage to spark the defense.
